The department has asked the public for help in finding the marker, which was placed on Beatties Ford Road at Dixon Street in 2001, according to The Charlotte Observer.
The department asked that anyone with information about the marker’s whereabouts call the Highway Historical Marker office at 919-814-6620. According to university spokeswoman Emiene Wright, the marker had never been vandalized or stolen in the past.
The university marker is one of at least 1,600 metal markers honoring historic people, places and events.
